Identity Day in Jerusalem: Students Celebrate Difference, Together

March 24th, 2014

A celebration of color, sound, feeling and creativity, the identity exhibition in the Max Rayne Hand in Hand Bilingual school in Jerusalem was a great success.

The exhibit is the culmination of months of learning in the 1st-9th grade classes and included expressions of many layers of identity: personal, familial, communal, religious, and national. Over the course of this project, students learned about their multiple identities, deepening their understanding about themselves and their surroundings.

The final projects were presented in the school gym. Parents were invited to visit, share in the excitement, and enjoy the music that the school choirs and ensembles performed for the audience. The exhibit remained up for the rest of the week so that hundreds of parents and community members could continue to come and learn from it.

The 6th grade students wrote projects about a “person who inspired them”. Amir N. chose Alfred Nobel, who invented dynamite “He wanted to make peace in the world”, Amir said while standing next to his project.

Rama B. chose the Egyptian singer Oum Kalthoum. “I play music, and that why she interested me. She is one of the best, and she sang in a time when most of the other singers were boys,” said Rama.

The 5th grade students wrote about an important person in their lives. One of the more moving pieces was by Omer H., a cancer survivor, who wrote about his mother, Limor. “In the days when I was fasting for my treatments, my mother would fast with me. We were always together,” wrote Omer. “My mother says that the hardest job in the world is parenting.”

“The most powerful thing that I’m leaving this exhibit with is the great diversity that exists here as well as each child’s unique personal expression,” said Nadia Kinnani, the principal of the elementary school, as she looked with joy and pride at the exhibit – a rare collection of creativity, honesty, thought, and beauty.
