THE HAIFA SCHOOL

Although Haifa is proud of its reputation as a mixed city for Jews and Arabs, the educational system did not include any integrated frameworks. In order to bridge this gap, Hand in Hand began to work with local Jews and Arabs to develop a shared community in 2011. The community initiated a range of activities, including a daycare program, which started in fall 2012 with 12 Jewish and Arab children.

After 5 years of work, the Haifa community opened a new 1st grade class in 2016, launching integrated bilingual education in the city of Haifa! Hand in Hand's 1st grade class opened under the umbrella of an existing elementary school, the Kababir school. We operate in close cooperation with the principal, but with the autonomy to fully implement our bilingual integrated model. In just a few years, we look forward to having a full elementary school Grades 1 - 6, along with our existing preschool and kindergarten programs.

"After five years of work, this day feels like a dream come true. Now I know that my son Arz and a generation of children in Haifa will grow up knowing that there are no boundaries to what they can achieve together."
-Samia Naffar Abu Raya

THE HAIFA COMMUNITY

“As parents, we cannot lay the burden of creating a shared future on the shoulders of our children. We, the adults, must lead the way.”

-Hand in Hand CEO Shuli Dichter

Hand in Hand’s adult communities are an essential way for us to expand our impact beyond the schools and create a broad-base for a shared civil society in Israel. Read more about our community approach here.

The Haifa community is made up of hundreds of Arab and Jewish adults who are committed to creating a shared society. They engage in activities that both build their friendships as well as dive into the conflict that underpins Jewish-Arab relations.

Some of these include:

  • Community hikes and tours
  • Holiday celebrations
  • Community dialogue
  • Local shared activism
