Hand in Hand Haifa Preschool receives municipal support!

December 30th, 2015

We have some wonderful news to start the new year -- Hand in Hand has received full municipal support to open an official integrated bilingual 1st grade in a public school in Haifa in 2016-17!

Last night the Mayor of Haifa, Yona Yahav, visited the preschool to sit down with parents and local activists in a show of support. He said:

I’ve always thought that Jews and Arabs should speak each other’s languages and be able to flow easily between Hebrew and Arabic. I am excited to announce the opening of the bilingual 1st grade - it is an important track to have in our education system in Haifa.

In September 2012, with a dozen families in Haifa we opened our first Hand in Hand bilingual integrated daycare, in what had been the garage of an old house. Since then we have grown rapidly, and this year we have 84 children in four preschool groups ages 1 - 5.  And now, thanks to the demonstrated success of our preschool, and the enthusiasm and energy of our community leaders and parents, we have received permission to open an official integrated bilingual elementary 1st grade with the full backing of the Mayor and the Haifa municipal education authorities.  The intention is that this will expand annually into a full elementary school.

This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship between us and the mayor. He is invested in us and will push us to succeed.  As parents we feel that this school is what Haifa needs – in these times of conflict, and in general. We are excited to continue to work with the municipality to build this from the ground-up - for our own children, and hopefully, a new generation of students in Haifa.

Hand in Hand's 1st grade class will open in school year 2016-17 under the umbrella of an existing elementary school, the Kababir school in the Kababir neighborhood which is convenient for both Jewish and Arab families.  We will operate in close cooperation with the principal, but with the autonomy to fully implement our bilingual integrated model including a plan to establish classroom space on school grounds for our 1st grade.  The principal is eager to work with us and see that the Hand in Hand approach impacts her school and community more broadly.  The well reputed school is grades 1 - 6, has 180 students and was a favorite choice of Hand in Hand's current parents.
