"You are the best ambassadors peace can possibly have."

US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power and US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro took time to visit the Max Rayne Hand in Hand school in Jerusalem this week. They met with our first grade students in the classroom that was targeted in an arson attack last year and then sat to speak with 7 Arab and Jewish high school students who are in the Model UN program in the school.

One student asked Ambassador Power about fear, and she said:

"Fear is natural. The way to break through fear is to see peoples faces. Not think about indivduals a certain way just because they are part of a certain group....  One reason why this school is so amazingly important is sometimes when people are afraid, they run so far away that they never have that chance to face their fears, and in a vaccum their fears multiply, and then the media can exacerbate those fears. Sometimes all of us can live in echo chambers, where we only hear people who agree with us, and then become even more convinced that we’re right without ever having our views challenged. Dan and I are ambassadors representing the United States, but you are also ambassadors - not only for the school, but for contact."

The high school students then gave the Ambassador t-shirts which were made for the Hand in Hand community solidarity marches in the summer of Gaza war. They also gave her a copy of the Hand in Hand shared calendar, which marks and expains Jewish, Christian, and Muslim holidays and national days. The Ambassador gave the students a photo of the two Hand in Hand students who lit the Hannuka candles at the White House reception last year. She said:

"This is a beautiful memory for the President and Michelle Obama and a symbol for how much we support what you’re doing. We hope that you carry the flame forward after you graduate - you are the best ambassadors that peace could possibly have."
