US Representatives Visit Hand in Hand Jerusalem School

U.S. Ambassador Dan Shapiro and his wife, Julie Fisher, along with USAID
Mission Director Dave Harden, visited today the site of this weekend's attack in Jerusalem. Ambassador Shapiro met with students, faculty, parents, and administration of the Max Rayne Hand in Hand (HIH) Jerusalem  bilingual school, and condemned the attack. Ambassador Shapiro: "What happened here Saturday night was terrible, and I join many Israeli leaders in condemning it. But I am encouraged and inspired by the resiliency I have seen today. Julie and I came to express our solidarity and full support, and that of the United States, for the school's community.  The U.S. Embassy and USAID are proud to be longstanding partners with the school, which teaches its students the values of coexistence between Jews and Arabs, tolerance, and loving your neighbor as yourself."

USAID, under its Conflict Management and Mitigation (CMM) program, supports HIH which, in March 2012, received a three-year grant to expand the HIH network of schools. The "Shared Community/School Integration" project seeks to establish Israeli-Jewish and Israeli-Arab shared communities, some to strengthen existing integrated schools and others to establish new bilingual study frameworks. HIH is an Israeli organization that builds peace, coexistence, and equality through a network of integrated bilingual schools for Israeli-Jewish and Israeli-Arab children and is committed to creating a strong and inclusive shared society in
Israel for all its citizens.

"It's not just that we at USAID give you support – you support us.  You inspire us.  You have changed us.  You have changed the DNA of our mission and shown us what can be done.” – David Harden
