Alumni Spotlight: Tamar Borman - Giving back to Hand in Hand

In Hand in Hand's all-new alumni program, we are organizing meetings where alumni support one another and work together to bring the values of inclusion and civic action to the world around them. Tamar Borman, a 22 year old graduate of our Jerusalem school, is taking the lead on this project and many others.

Tamar graduated from the Hand in Hand school in 2012 (above is a photo from graduation, Tamar is on the right) and spent two years doing national service with autistic children. “I think I chose to work with special needs kids because I had always learned to be open to people who were different from me," she says, "to have empathy for their difference and the challenges that come with that.”

After Tamar finished her time in service, she started thinking about how she could be involved in Hand in Hand. “School was a place with a diverse environment with Arabic and Hebrew languages music, and a culture of openness and acceptance – a place where I could be myself, where it was ok to be different. When I left school, I really missed that. And I knew many alumni felt the same way – so when I heard that hand in hand was starting to build an alumni program,  I wanted to be a part of the process and help out as much as I can. It seemed important for us to get together more regularly, to build up a group – not only of us in Jerusalem, but from Wadi Ara and the Galilee also. I feel responsible – it’s important for me to give what I can to make this alumni group happen and grow, and become an important voice in society here.” Tamar now helps coordinate Hand in Hand alumni activity.
